Place Value Partitioning

You break the numbers into parts.  Ones, tens, hundreds and thousands, then add the same parts together.  Then put it all together.

I meant you put the zero on the end as a place holder, not add zero.

Compatible Numbers

Compatible numbers are numbers that go together to make adding easier.

The Last Post

In Room 7 we have been learning about World Wars 1 & 2 .   We learnt about the Last Post.

During the American Civil War, between North and South America over slavery, a Northern soldier heard the cries of a soldier wounded out on the battle field.  He didn't know if the wounded soldier was from his side or the other side.  He crawled out onto the battle field on this stomach during the pitch black night with soldiers from the South firing at him.  He dragged the soldier back to his trench.  Before he reached safety, the soldier was dead.  He lit a lantern and he saw the face of his own son.  His son was studying music in the South when the war started.   Without telling his dad, he joined the Southern Army, the Confederates.  The father asked for a band to play during the funeral.  All they gave him was one musician, who played the bugle.  The Last Post was a tune his son had written, which he found in one of his son's pockets.

In the war it was used to signal the soldiers to return at night time.

Now we play the Last Post on ANZAC Day to remember soldiers and others who died in wars protecting our country.

ANZAC Day!!!

World War 1 started in 1914.   These were the countries in the war...

Italy, German, Austria and Hungary and The Ottoman Empire VS Russia, France, Britain, the ANZACs and Serbia. The war ended on November 11, 1918.

We think WW1 started because a Serbian terrorist killed Archduke Franz-Ferdinand from Austria.  The Serbian people were also not happy with the land they got from the Balkan Wars.

April 25th is ANZAC Day.  It is the day the ANZACs landed in Gallipoli to fight the Ottomans, Turkish people.  We remember all the people who died during the war and to show we are grateful.

Place Value

Place Value is all about the value of a digit in a number. In 651, the digit 5 has a Place Value of 50.

We learnt about Place Value by looking at the houses in Mathsville...

Mr and Mrs Trendsetter, Mr and Mrs Thousands, Mr and Mrs Millions,...

Here is a picture of them.
